Grammy Recap: My View from the Cheap Seats

Had a great time watching last Sunday's Grammy Awards from the very last row of the Staples Center, despite the fact that I forgot my glasses in Boston (which reduced the miniscule celebrities to mere glittery blurs). Figured I should share my thoughts before everyone is consumed by the next big Sunday show, the Superbowl (go Saints!).

Lady Gaga - Her outfits were so cumbersome and freaky that someone had to hold her hand as she walked to her seat in the audience. I'm all for originality, but she makes me a little nervous. If she showed up at my door on a dark night, I'd activate my Brinks alarm.

Beyonce - Flawless, per usual, though I was disappointed that her routine was plucked from her latest tour, which I'd already seen multiple times. Still loved it though.

Pink - Performance of the night. I didn't need my glasses to get the effect of that crazy chick swinging from a rope through the arena.

Michael Jackson Tribute - The singing was so phenomenal that it gave me chills, but I'm still waiting for the classic tribute where people sing his greatest hits in a well arranged medley.

Taylor Swift - She seems like a really sweet girl, and I truly enjoyed her Saturday Night Live monologue a few months back, but the Grammys were forcing it with the fairy tale ending. Had Kanye-Gate never happened, Album of the Year would've definitely gone to someone 21 or over.

Other thoughts? Mary J? Eminem's comeback? Wardrobe mistakes? Post 'em.

Comments:
Rachel you Forgot to Mention the highlights of Being on The Red Carpet, Playing Musical Chairs as we dodged the ushers to move closer to the stage. Also. that we ended up in Perfect Balcony seats, and that we Also held onto our cameras when everyone else checked them (BC we are So Bad :)

Ditto @ the Taylor swift performance and Album of the Year win. I'm so sick of it already.

I was actually saddened not to see Kanye in the audience this year. Not sure if he is still blacklisted (and hence, not invited) or if he chose to be prideful and not come, but he was missed (by me).

I agree with all your other sentiments. However, I was deeply disappointed by the MJ tribute. Not only was I unprepared with my 3D glasses (my own fault, I just didn't plan well) but I too was hoping for a medley of some of his greatest hits, complete with dance tributes (a la Usher) and so forth. It was a lovely performance, I suppose, but I expected a little more (or maybe something "different," not necessarily "more").

I saw you on Chronicle on Channel 5 and I am inspired to do some writing as I too went to school to write and sadly I am not spending time on MY blog and focusing on what I would like to do. I have been impressed that you have made a difference and touched lives. I do I.T. and it is great, but for some reason I'd like to touch more people with the word and get out who I am or what i want. Thank YOU for making a difference and inspiring! For me time management is a problem. I never seem to make the time to do anything such as write a few chapters. I will focus on a time-line to do so.

Matt - time management is the eternal problem! I haven't been so great at it myself lately, so I need to commit a certain number of hours a week and make my friends yell at me if I don't follow through.

So I'm way late, but who cares. I had 3D glasses from Avatar and that tribute, in a word, BLURRY!! The 3D glasses didn't matter, it wasn't in 3D. The producers were trying to pull an okey-doke on everyone. I totally agree with Yakini. I felt cheated without the medley/dance routine. At the very least, there could have been flashes of him in the background rather than a scene from "This is it." It seemed like an afterthought.
