Friends: How Many Of Us Have Them?

Note: if you do not recognize the song reference in the title of this entry, you are officially too young to be reading my blog.

Recently went to a wedding of one of my girls in California (picture to right), and was reminded what absolutely fabulous women I have the pleasure of calling friends. They are an eclectic bunch, with day jobs that range from delivering babies to choreographing for a Japanese pop star, and hobbies that span bowling to clothing design. I feel elevated just to be in their company, hearing of their adventures and laughing for hours on end.

But what really makes them special are not their infinite number of accomplishments, but that they are truly ones you can depend on (song reference #2). And I'm reminded how many people could be made better if they had a crew to ground them and remind them of their potential. A few snippets from the highlight reel:

- Job advice: "If your career is not one where you are making a dramatic contribution to the betterment of society, then it had better give you the time or means to be a public servant when you're off the clock." -Grandma, 1999 (yes, I count my grandmother as one of my homegirls. Is that a problem?)

- Fashion advice: "If you're going to rock something from Forever 21, and you're actually 31, make sure you wear a single item purchased from the store, and not the entire outfit that was hanging on the mannequin." -Nyvette, 2008 (my singular reason for having a Verizon cell phone. Without our daily mobile-to-mobile chats, I'd be a hot mess.)

- Guy advice: "I've figured it out. They're not ready to be the men they have to be in order to be with us!" -Luam, 2004 (one of my favorite quotes ever. Happy birthday, Lu! See you in Miami.)

Friends! (reference #3)

Teen Phrase of the Day: "You Forced It"

For folks who've been out of touch with the teen scene as of late, I've gotta catch you up. If you want to participate in the youth dialogue of today, you must be familiar with the term "forcing it." It's somewhat difficult to define, so perhaps I should give a couple of examples:

1) Beating someone up, videotaping it, and putting it on youtube is forcing it. Not only are you absolutely insane for physically assaulting someone, but then you're actually assuming that others would like to watch it for entertainment value? That's a force.

2) Putting a gospel song on your myspace page is forcing it. Not to mention absolutely hilarious. Actually, having a myspace page at all as an adult is a debatable force. Discuss.

3) Being my friend and not owning a copy of When The Lights Go Down is such a force. What are you waiting for exactly? I mean, seriously. Stop smiling. You really are a force. Click here and pick it up, will you? It's the same price as a venti mocha at Starbucks: http://www.amazon.com/When-Lights-Down-Rachel-Skerritt/dp/0758216025/ref=sr_1_3/104-9940877-2704735?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1190847860&sr=1-3

P.S... This blog entry, may be, admittedly, forcing it ;-)
