Late on a Date: Can You Ever Be Forgiven?
Unprecedented - two blog posts in one day. But I have to do something before I absolutely blow my lid. I had plans to meet a guy for dinner at 8. Being that he has no car (we'll save that issue for another blog post), I was supposed to pick him up. However, I need directions to his house. When we spoke over two hours ago, he said he'd call me in an hour with the info. It's now 8:17.
There are several pet peeves being evoked through this act of callous inconsideration (is that a word?). First off, I hate being ready to go out and I'm stuck sitting in my house. I feel like my make-up is wearing off before anyone has a chance to see it. Second, I'm absolutely starving, being that I planned my meals today around the assumption that I was eating dinner at 8. When I'm hungry, I'm cranky. Not good news for the person who will be in my company this evening. Third, and this one is most important: I HATE when people say they're going to do something and they don't do it. Homeboy said he was going to call in an hour. It is now two and a half hours later. If one of my students handed in an assignment after the due date, he would lose points. Shouldn't it be the same in my social life?
This post is probably irrevocably damaging to guys' opinions about me. I sound like a complete control freak who is unable to roll with the punches. Sure, I understand that things happen. But in an age of cell phones, email, text messages - is there ever an excuse not to tell the person waiting for you, "Hey, I'm running behind schedule. Sorry about the inconvenience." I'd be fine with that!
A savvy reader might at this point ask why I haven't just called him. But wait - I DID call. And he didn't answer. Even more infuriating. However, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I forgive very easily. Hopefully, when he does call, he will immediately apologize and have a decent excuse. When I get there, he can compliment the outfit that I've been sitting in for over an hour, and most importantly, he can feed me. As soon as I get a piece of bread in my system, I'll be back to the happy person you see in the picture accompanying this blog.
UPDATE: contact made. He'd fallen asleep on his couch. I will make an effort to roll with the punches and return to being nice. Sleep happens, I suppose.

Writing A Novel: How Did I Do That, Again?
So I'm writing my third book, and it's due in February. The first two times I did it, there was no one waiting for it to be done. The only thing rushing me was my own sense of urgency. Now, I have literally signed a contract promising this novel's completion in just two more months. The pressure.
I just got the advance copies of No More Lies, my second novel, in the mail - very exciting stuff. I was just flipping through it, reading a few passages, and I'm actually impressed. This book is pretty good! Which brings me to the question - how in the hell did I do it? How did I sit down and write 317 pages in six months?
I have myself on a strict schedule over this holiday vacation. I'm supposed to be writing two chapters a day. So far, I've...posted this blog.
Wish me luck, and Merry Christmas!
