Black Women and Marriage: Don't Hold Your Breath

Check out this article about the realities of marriage for black women in society today. It's part of CNN's Black in America series, which has been pretty interesting so far. I don't love Soledad O'Brien as the host (she seems uncomfortable asking difficult questions at times), but on the whole it's touching on important issues:

So the question for my single female readers is: will you feel unfulfilled if you, in fact, never get married? Married folks, feel free to chime in with your "already hitched" input.

I'm having a wonderful time on vacation this week. Currently posting this entry in beautiful St. Lucia, having already visited Antigua, land of 365 beaches. Do you think it would be too much to go to Vegas right after this, or should I take my tanned butt home?

Comments:
if you can stand the summer heat, Vegas Baby !!!

i'm a hater...so i take take ure ass home!!

i stil havent watched my recording of the blac-n-america series, so i dont want to comment too prematurely.

yes, one of my life's goals is to be married. so i'm not ashamed to say that i will be disappointed if that's not accomplished (although i am posting anonymously, so maybe i am embarrassed - lol).

and it depends - are you going to vegas because your future husband invited you? :-)

Hmmm...good question...will I feel unfulfilled? I don't think I'd feel unfulfilled if I'm with the person that I want to spend the rest of my life with unmarried. I mean, isn't the botton line to be with the man or woman you love and who loves you and makes you happy? At the end of the day-isn't that what it's about? I'm probably cynical about the whole marriage thing but what does the piece of paper say about the couple besides the social aspect of telling the world that you are married? Maybe, I'm getting too old and jaded but I see some of the drama with married folks. But married folks please feel free to school me! I'd love to sit and talk to Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon, who are not married but have been going for 20 years with what seems to be a strong relationship...
Don;t get me wrong-I think love and marriage is beautiful and if it came along one day yes I probably would marry but I think there is too much societal pressure place on it...
